Every person has various identities that comprise their social location. When identities between clients and social workers differ, it can be easy to allow implicit bias and cloud their judgment. Given that social justice and cultural humility are core values and components of social work, it is important for all social workers to learn how to challenge their biases and work with clients holding different identities.
In this workshop, we will explore how to use the NASW Code of Ethics as a tool for navigating ethical dilemmas involving social justice. We will review the NASW Code of Ethics, highlighting principles and standards related to privilege, oppression, and managing biases. We will discuss various trauma-informed strategies in navigating conversations, reflect on your own social location, and explore how your identities enhance or inhibit your work with clients. Common ethical dilemmas and how to navigate those situations in an effective manner will also be discussed.
This class meets the licensure requirement for 3 hours of continuing education in ethics.
